A complete three volume First Edition set of this fascinating biography of Countess Canning (wife of Charles Canning, Governor-General of India during the Mutiny) and her sister the Marchioness of Waterford (best known for the mural in the Northumberland village of Ford where local inhabitant's faces were used for the Biblical characters painted on the walls of the Lady Waterford Hall).

Previously owned by John Rolls, Baron Llangattock (MP for Monmouthshire, Mayor of Monmouth and father of the co-founder of the Rolls Royce motor car company Charles Stewart Rolls).

Book Condition (All Volumes) - Good: Hardback, 12mo (approx 7.5 inches / 19.5 cm tall), Volume 1 - x + 381 pages with 17 mono illustrations (including frontispiece) and 4 page publisher's catalogue at rear; Volume 2 - 489 pages with 9 monochrome illustrations (including frontis); Volume 3 - viii + 495 with 38 illustrations (including frontis) + 4 page publisher's catalogue at rear.

Moderate to significant general wear and soiling to the original brown boards and spines, gilt spine and front board lettering clear and bright, slight lean to all three volumes, securely bound with no loose pages, Baron Llangattock's armorial bookplate on front pastedowns of Volumes 1 & 3 (and upside down on the rear pastedown of Volume 2; some slight snagging to endpapers due to bookplate glue), fore-edge corner tears to Volume 3 pages 283 and 352 where they have been opened slightly carelessly (no loss of text in either case), occasional light foxing (very occasionally moderate), light toning to pages 314-5 of Volume 2 due to insertion of a small press cutting (still present), otherwise all three volumes are very clean and clear in a near-Very Good condition throughout. No dust jackets.
