An exceptionally rare First Edition of Sir Frederic Goldsmid's account of the development of telegraphic communication between Britain and India. Comprises two sections - "Part 1: Telegraph" and "Part 2: Travel". A very hard to find volume with all illustrations and folding maps confirmed present.

Book Condition - Fair: Hardback, 8vo (approx 9 inches / 23 cm tall), xiv + 673 pages with errata slip, forty four wood engravings, tissue guarded steel engraving of Colonel Patrick Stewart, three maps (two of which are folding with short repairs using cellotape and book film - only light tape discolouration to plain reverses, almost no loss), two pages of advertisements and a sixty page publisher's catalogue at rear.

Significant to heavy general wear and rubbing to the original green boards and spine (cloth splits to most of spine length adjoining both front and rear boards, significant abrasion to edges and corners with underlying boards exposed, area of residue / discolouration to top third of front board where a bookplate has been removed), gilt spine lettering and front board illustration faded / rubbed but still clear, fully bound but hinges weak (rear hinge very weak) with webbing exposed and some internal separation (no loose pages), top edge gilt (tarnished and spotted but still bright), pencilled reference number (very hard to see) on top corner of dark brown front free endpaper, original owner's name and address on "Part 1" Title Page and further owner's name stamp on top corner of plain reverse to the front free endpaper, occasional light soiling (very occasionally moderate), light paper rippling and some occasional creasing, otherwise clean and clear on lightly toned paper in a Good condition throughout.
