An acceptable First Edition four volume set of this very hard to find collection of Rowlandson's original illustrations for "The Schoolmaster’s Tour" with accompanying verses by Dr. William Combe and other poems.
Originally published between May 1809 and April 1811. Rowlandson reissued his illustrations in 1812 under the title "The Tour of Dr Syntax in Search of the Picturesque" (followed in 1820 by "Dr Syntax In Search of Consolation" and in 1821 by "The Third Tour of Dr Syntax In Search Of A Wife"). All four volumes are still bound in their original full leather boards but the spine strip for Volume 2 is missing.
These volumes include 51 (out of 52) original hand coloured and mono plates - whilst the numbering of the plates is somewhat arbitrary and not always in numerical sequence, all appear to be present alongside the correct part of the text and only one of the colour plates from Volume 2 is missing. Full details are as follows:
Volume 1 - Fair: 404 pages with four page index at rear and 13 colour plates confirmed present
Volume 2 - Fair Minus: 372 pages with three page index at rear and 13 colour plates (out of 14) confirmed present - Plate 1 is missing
Volume 3 - Fair: 364 pages with four page index at rear and 12 colour plates confirmed present (there are page numbering errors in this volume with page numbers 287-288 being omitted - the index showing no poems for either of these pages; similarly pages 47-48, 95-96 and 239-240 are also not present - each precedes an instalment of "The Schoolmaster's Tour" and none of these pages are mentioned in the index)
Volume 4 - Fair: 342 pages with and 13 plates (11 colour plus 2 monochrome) confirmed present - however two pages (A to Q) of the index are missing.
Please note the blank page following the last index page has been removed in Volumes 1 & 2.
Book Condition (All Volumes) - Hardback, 8vo (approx 8.5 inches / 21.5 cm tall) with engraved Title Page to all four volumes. Significant general wear and rubbing to the original full leather boards and spines with small amounts of leather loss (Volume 2 spine missing, 1.5 inch / 3.5cm split to spine leather on Volume 4 with further splits developing to spines on Volumes 1 & 3), Title and Volume labels still present on Volumes 3 & 4 but missing on Volume 1, gilt spine lettering and decoration very heavily rubbed but still present, all boards and text blocks securely bound but hinge papers broken with binding cords exposed in all four volumes (Volume 2 boards held by binding cords; a small number of Volume 2 pages are slightly unevenly bound and protruding with resultant wear to the their exposed edges), all paper edges marbled but heavily faded / toned, owner's printed name-plate ("John Mottershead") on front pastedowns (Volume 4 nameplate has been largely removed with a significant residue remaining), light to moderate general foxing / toning and soiling (occasionally significant to heavy), some occasional paper creasing and short snags / tears (no loss of text or illustrations), very occasional light to moderate moisture staining, moderate to heavy offsetting from the plates, text generally clear and very easy to read in a Good Minus to Fair+ general condition.
Total weight with packaging just under 2.4 kg.
