A very acceptable Third Edition reading copy of William Jevons' acclaimed work on the principles of logic and scientific method. First published in 1874 with this Third Edition published in 1879.
Presented in five parts: Book 1 - "Formal Logic, Deductive and Inductive", Book 2 - "Number, Variety and Probability", Book 3 - "Methods of Measurement", Book 4 - "Inductive Investigation" and Book 5 - "Generalisation, Analogy and Classification". A highly regarded economist, statistician and logician, Jevons was the first economist to define the theory of "marginal" (or "final") utility in his classic 1871 work "The Theory Of Political Economy".

Book Condition - Fair+: Hardback, 12mo (approx 7.5 inches / 19 cm tall), frontispiece illustration of "The Logical machine", xliv + 786 pages (several still unopened) followed by a single page advertisement of other works by William Jevons.Significant to heavy general wear and rubbing to the original brown boards and spine (abrasion to spine extremities, underlying boards exposed at corners, 1.5 inch / 3.5cm cloth split at top of spine adjoining rear board with a further much shorter split developing adjoining front board), gilt spine lettering dulled but still clear, text block securely bound but front hinge very weak and rear hinge paper splitting with a narrow strip of webbing just becoming visible, no previous ownership inscriptions but Queen's Prize for "the Examination of Science Schools" certificate on front pastedown (dated May 1881) and evidence of a couple carefully erased bookseller notations on the half title, moderate to significant foxing to a couple pages adjoining the front and rear free endpapers, infrequent light (very occasionally moderate) internal soiling, overall internally Good on lightly toned paper in a very clean and clear condition. No dust jacket.
