A near-Very Good First Edition copy of this lovely collection of children's stories beautifully illustrated by Gustav Dore.
Book Condition - Very Good-: Hardback, oblong 16mo (approx 6.5 inches / 17 cm tall), viii + 243 pages with eight monochrome plates by Gustav Dore (including tissue guarded frontispiece) plus several very attractive vignettes and illustrated chapter headings.
Moderate general wear and soiling to the original red illustrated boards and spine, crushing to spine extremities but cloth not broken, gilt spine and front board lettering / illustrations very clear and bright, securely bound but front hinge very weak with webbing exposed, very attractive highly coloured prizewinner's plate on front free endpaper (Aldersgate Schools, April 1888), all edges heavily gilt (wonderfully clear and bright), light to moderate toning and foxing to half title, very small light patch of finger soiling to plain reverse of illustration opposite page 110, otherwise internally beautifully clean and clear in an excellent condition throughout on lightly toned paper.
A lovely copy of this very hard to find title. No dust jacket.
