A near-Very Good First Edition (second impression) account of the lives of former plantation slaves in the Gullah coastal region of South Carolina and their descendants. Written by the 1929 Pulitzer Prize winning author of "Scarlet Sister Mary" with photographs by the acclaimed American photographer best known for her portraits of the people of Appalachia. Second impression - published just one month after the first printing in December 1933.
Book Condition - Good+: Hardback, 251 pages with 70 mono full page photographs. Moderate to significant general wear to the original blue boards and spine, spine significantly faded, securely bound, no previous ownership inscriptions, top edge blue, fore and bottom edges rough cut, light foxing to endpapers, internally beautifully clean and clear in an excellent condition throughout. No dust jacket. A lovely copy of this wonderfully atmospheric and hard to find volume.
