An excellent copy of this hard to find first printing of D. H. Lawrence's first collection of short stories; extremely hard to come come by in any condition.
Hardback, 310 pages + 2 page advertisement for four of Lawrence's earlier works and a 20 page catalogue of Duckworth publications.
Book condition: Good+, original blue boards with light to moderate spotting, light corner and spine bumping, spine moderately faded, gilt lettering still bright on front board, securely bound but slight separation between pages 208 and 209, previous owners initials and bookplate on front pastedown, moderate spotting and browning to end papers and adjoining pages, otherwise internally clean with some light spotting, moderate browning and spotting to all paper edges. No dust jacket.
First Printing Status: Whilst some debate continues regarding whether the version with the 20 page or the 16 page Duckworth catalogue is the true first printing, the consensus view is that the 20 page version is the earlier of the two. Edward McDonald's excellent 1925 bibliography leans towards the 20 page version being the original when pointing out that the 16 page version also appears at the end of Amores (1916) whilst the same 20 page version appears at the end of Sons and Lovers (1913). However McDonald isn't conclusive on this subject and he makes the point that even the publishers were unable to clarify which was the earlier version and considered him "mildly insane" for being so interested.
For us the conclusive view is that expressed by Gilbert Fabes in his 1933 Lawrence bibliography when he states the first printing has the twenty page catalogue preceeded by a two page advertisement for four of Lawrence's earlier works (as in the copy offered by us here). The second printing has the sixteen page catalogue without the preceding two page advertisement.
