A Good rebound copy of Carl von Clausewitz's work on the theory of warfare and military tactics. Written between 1816 and 1830 and first published posthumously in three volumes in German ("Vom Kriege") between 1832 and 1834. This volume is based on the Third German Edition and is the 1873 First English (Single Volume) Edition as translated by Colonel James John Graham.
Recently rebound by George Bayntun of Bath in full green morocco with five raised bands - the edges of the text block have been lightly trimmed and heavily gilded.
This copy originally came from the military "Staff College Library" (Quetta) with annotations to show it was sold as "surplus" in 1933 - the original stamped and annotated library endpapers (dated 1923) have been retained and bound in at the front, the only other library stamp is at the bottom of the last page of the index (Volume 3 - Page 181).
The page numbering is confusing and runs as follows: xx pages comprising prelims, Preface, Introduction, Memoir of von Clausewitz, Errata and Volume 1 "Contents" page followed by Volume 1 - 164 pages (comprising "Book I - On The Nature of War", "Book II - On The Theory of War", "Book III - Of Strategy in General" and "Book IV - The Combat"); Volume 2 - iv + 210 pages (comprising "Book V - Military Forces", "Book VI - Defence"); Volume 3 - iv + 181 pages (comprising "Book VII - The Attack", "Sketches for Book VIII - Plan of War", Appendices and General Index to all three volumes).
Hardback, 8vo (approx 8 inches / 21 cm tall), pages numbered as above with a tissue guarded oval photo-mounted frontispiece and facsimile signature (heavy foxing to frontispiece reverse - moderate foxing to illustration as photographed).
Book Condition - Externally: Very Good; Internally - Good:
Minimal wear to the rebound green morocco boards and spine with gilt spine lettering and text block gilding clear and bright, intermittent mostly light to moderate internal foxing / soiling (very occasionally significant to heavy) but overall internally Good in a mostly very clean, clear and easily readable condition. No dust jacket.
