A near-Very Good complete four volume ex-library set of Sir Walter Scott's acclaimed collection of Scottish ballads.

No publishing history but the introductory "Advertisement" in Volume 1 is dated March 1833 (Scott's dedication to the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry is dated April 1830 and the lengthy introductory essay on "Popular Poetry" is dated March 1830). Thereafter the text would appear to be the same as the 1802 First Edition (including Scott's original Introduction which runs from page 97 to page 239).

Book Conditions: Volumes 1-3 - Good+; Volume 4 - Good: Hardback, 16mo (6.5 inches / 17 cm tall), Vol. 1- viii + 428 pages; Vol. 2 - 360 pages; Vol. 3 - 348 pages; Vol. 4 - 388 pages.

Light to moderate general wear to the original brown leather and gilt boards and spines, carefully repaired splitting to external spine hinges (all boards firmly attached but front boards on Volumes 1 and 4 are becoming loose), library numbers at base of spines, small amount of loss to top portion of Volume 1 spine, all pages securely bound, no previous ownership inscriptions but library stamps and moderate evidence of removed / partially removed library cards and slips to marbled front endpapers, further library stamps to plain reverse of Title Pages, beautifully engraved Title Page illustrations with additional frontispiece plates to all four volumes, no half titles (these appear to have been carefully removed), all paper edges gilt, original marker ribbons still present, some occasional foxing in Volumes 1-3; light (occasionally moderate) foxing to Volume 4, otherwise internally all four volumes are beautifully clean and clear in an excellent condition throughout.

Overall a beautiful complete set in an excellent state of preservation - offered at a much reduced price due to library markings.
