A Good First ("authorised" and expanded) Edition, April 1891 first printing of Oscar Wilde's controversial novel with the following First Edition, first printing points - thick, grey paper-covered and beveled boards, no publishing history, typographic error at the beginning of line 23 of page 208 ("nd" instead of "and" - this was corrected for the July 1891 signed limited edition), publisher displayed as "Ward Lock AND Co London New York & Melbourne" (no reference to "Bowden"), no publisher's imprint or advertisements at rear.
Following initial publication in Lippincott's magazine (1890) and an unauthorised US edition the same year Wilde revised his work and added six new chapters for this first authorized edition.

Book Condition - Good Minus: Hardback, 8vo, vii + 334 pages. Significant general wear and bumping (board exposed at corners) to the original vellum spine and gilt decorated grey boards (Charles Ricketts' 10 gilt "butterfles" design), spine toned with gilt spine lettering faded, securely bound but front hinge paper split with webbing becoming exposed, plain grey endpapers, Elizabeth Sherman Cameron's armorial bookplate on front pastedown and signature on the front free endpaper, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, some very light foxing to the prelims, otherwise internally very clean and clear in a Very Good internal condition.
