Thank you for your interest but this book has now been sold

A near-Very Good copy of the First American Edition of Dore's magnificent collection of illustrations of Britain's capital city. Both praised and condemned for being one of the first works by a highly regarded and popular artist to show London as it really was, from the slums to the garden-fetes, this is considered by many to be a masterpiece of early illustrated social commentary. Complete with all pages and plates present in excellent condition.

Book Condition - Good: Hardback, xxii + 191 very large format pages and 55 full page plates (including the illustrated Title Page). Significant general wear and staining to the original blue boards, spine faded but gilt lettering still clear, gilt front board illustration of St. Paul's Cathedral clear and bright, securely bound, all edges heavily gilt and still beautifully clear and bright, previous owner's neatly pencilled signature on front free endpaper (Watson Tomkins - Christmas 1889), internally very clean on cream coloured paper, some light discolouration to part of page 120 and the plate opposite where a press cutting has been stored, otherwise near-perfect throughout. No dust jacket.

Overall an excellent copy of this very hard to find edition.

Total weight with packaging 2.9Kg.
