Thank you for your interest but this collection has now been sold

An exceedingly rare (though sadly incomplete) First Edition box set of this collection of children's poems and stories prepared by Grace Rhys. All the eight volumes present are in an exceptionally good and clean condition for a collection of children's books and are graded Very Good to Very Good- (some appear to be unread with a couple pages in the Aesop volume still unopened). The original maroon and gilt boards and spines are wonderfully clean, clear and fresh and nearly all ribbon ties are present (the sole exception being the rear tie to the Sleeping Beauty volume).

The box was designed to hold 12 volumes (four of which are missing) and is sturdy and complete though somewhat faded on the front panel. Seven of these volumes were published in 1895, Sleeping Beauty was published in 1894.

Book Conditions (All Volumes) - Very Good to Very Good-: Small format hardback, Nursery Rhymes (pages not numbered), Sleeping Beauty & Dick Whittington And His Cat (60 pages), Aesop's Fables (pages not numbered), Blue Beard & Puss In Boots (51 pages), Fireside Stories (60 pages), Ali Baba & The Forty Thieves (63 pages), Fairy Gifts & Tom Hickathrift (60 pages) and The House That Jack Built (60 pages).

Very light general wear to the original maroon boards and spine, gilt spine and front board lettering / illustrations wonderfully clear and bright, hinges fully intact with all pages securely bound but some early internal separation in a couple volumes, no previous ownership inscriptions, light to moderate toning and foxing to endpapers and paper edges, some staining to the endpaper edges in two volumes (excess glue in the original production process has caused the maroon cloth beneath the endpaper edges to run), top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges rough cut, some very occasional light internal soiling and toning / foxing but generally beautifully clean and clear in an excellent condition throughout. No dust jackets.

Box Condition - Good-: An exceptionally rare example of this very attractive presentation box. Light to moderate general wear and shelf soiling, notable fading and soiling to the gilt decorated front and top panels, internally decorated with a floral paper design - some maroon offsetting from the book boards to one of the side panels.
