A somewhat distressed copy of this highly entertaining and intriguing work of early 19th Century occult instruction.
Book condition: Fair, hardback, 560 pages with four (of five) colour plates and numerous fascinating charts and engravings. Half bound with five band leather spine, significant bumping and general board wear, front board loose (attached by a single binding chord) and front free end paper detached but otherwise very securely bound internally, various book dealer's and owner's notations on front and rear endpapers, obviously very well used with occasional annotations and significant spotting and soiling throughout. No dust jacket.
The title page claims this is the 'Seventh Edition' but editions 1-5 are believed to have never existed - the 'Sixth Edition' was a compilation of issues from a short-lived periodical titled 'The Straggling Astrologer' edited by Robert Cross Smith from 1824 which was then significantly expanded into this 'Seventh' edition with the assistance of Merlinus Anglicus. Pages 389 to 396 also appear to be missing but there's no evidence of their ever having been inserted (however there is a gap in the adjoining illustration numbers) and there are other page numbering errors (e.g. page 521 is printed as 512).
Overall something of a rarity with only one other copy currently being listed for sale online. Highly entertaining throughout and a fascinating insight to the mindset of early 19th Century 'seekers after the hidden truths'.
Total weight with packaging 750g.
