A somewhat distressed but still acceptable reading copy of this very hard to find First Edition, first printing of Lewis Carroll's classic.
Dated 1872 on the title page but actually published in December 1871. No additional publishing information shown (second printing understood to state "10th Thousand" on the title page); includes the noted first printing error on page 21 (i.e. 'wabe' instead of 'wade' in the mirror-image version of Jabberwocky).
Book condition: Fair- / Poor+: Hardback, 224 pages (all present) with 50 illustrations by John Tenniel. Heavy wear and soiling to original maroon boards, slight loss to base of spine, front and rear endpapers removed, pastedowns covered in a child's writing / scribble, still firmly bound but a number of sections separating internally, owner's name on half title, loss to top inch of pages 71-74 (text not affected), significant soiling and general wear throughout, child's colouring to drawing of Tweedledum and Tweedledee on page 67. No dust jacket.
